Somerset County Public Schools is accepting applications for the position of Varsity Assistant Football Coach for the 2026–2027 school year at Washington Academy & High School
Position Summary
The Varsity Assistant Football Coach is responsible for the leadership, supervision, and administration of the school’s varsity football program. This role ensures a safe, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate athletic program that aligns with Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), COMAR, MPSSAA regulations, and local Board of Education policies.
Essential Responsibilities

Plan, organize, and supervise all aspects of the varsity football program, including practices, competitions, and team activities

Provide leadership and oversight to assistant coaches, ensuring compliance with district and state requirements

Promote student-athlete safety, sportsmanship, academic accountability, and positive school representation

Ensure appropriate supervision of student-athletes at all times, including during travel and off-campus events

Implement and enforce MPSSAA rules, eligibility requirements, and athletic code of conduct standards

Collaborate with the Athletic Director and school administration regarding scheduling, supervision, and program needs

Ensure required documentation, certifications, and trainings for all coaching staff are completed and maintained

Address program-related concerns in accordance with school system procedures

Perform additional duties related to the football program as assigned by the Athletic Director or school administration
Required Qualifications

Demonstrated knowledge of football fundamentals, rules, and safe coaching practices

Ability to effectively supervise students and coaching staff in a school-based athletic environment

Willingness and ability to complete all required pre-service and annual trainings, including but not limited to:
-
Child Abuse and Neglect Recognition and Reporting
-
Safe Schools / School Safety training
-
CPR, AED, and First Aid
-
Concussion Awareness and Management
-
Any additional MSDE, MPSSAA, or district-required coaching certifications
-
Successful completion of required background checks and clearance requirements in accordance with Maryland law and Board policy
Preferred Qualifications
-
Prior head or assistant coaching experience at the high school level
-
Experience working with adolescents in an educational or athletic setting
-
Knowledge of MPSSAA rules and eligibility requirements
Compensation
This is a stipend position. Full stipend payment is contingent upon completion of all assigned duties, required trainings, and the full athletic season, in accordance with Board-approved stipend schedules and district procedures.
